The Point

For years now, we have heard about 'The Point' here on Hatteras, but have never had the opportunity to check it out due to our lack of a 4 wheel drive vehicle and recent restrictions involving the preservation of certain birds and sea turtles. This year, we heard the point was open so we shuttled out the entire Buxton crew in the 2 vehicles we had that could make the trip. The drive through the sandy beach was an experience in itself...I can only compare it to driving through snow and constantly trying to regain control as you fishtail through drifts. The point itself is a spectacular sight. It is where the Labrador current and Gulf Stream current come together and create turbulent water and miles of sandbars. The fishing is said to be some of the best. We only witnessed folks reeling in skates and a few bluefish. One man had just caught a 6 foot shark so needless to say those two facts kept the kids out of the water. We stayed and watched the sunset before heading back to Buxton beach for our last bonfire. It has been a wonderful two week vacation, but I can say I am somewhat ready to get home to my doggies and my bed.
